Privileged User Manager V2.1 released

19th September 2008

PERTH, Western Australia.  September 19th, 2008: Perth software house, Applecross Technologies Pty Ltd. ("APTECH") today announced the public Beta release of V2.1 of its Privileged User Manager ® ("PUM") software.  The release provides users with the first, commercial-strength administrator account (super user) monitoring and management package that is available at no greater a cost than a supported version of the open source alternatives.

The release is a result of three years development effort, driven by legislation such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, PCI and the European Data Directives, that may require controls over the access rights of administration accounts.  PUM allows end user organizations to manage and monitor the use of those administration accounts, providing an indelible audit trail of all activity.

Neil Chaney, CEO of Applecross Technologies said, "This release of PUM provides users with the most cost-effective solution to a problem that exists in all legislative compliance programs. Administrators need to be monitored but must not be unduly restricted if they are to perform their duties efficiently.  PUM gives organizations a simple to use, comprehensive and secure method of monitoring and managing these super users."

Administrator accounts on operating systems such as UNIX, Linux and Microsoft Windows have historically provided wide-sweeping access rights to data, including audit trails, held on those systems.   Legislation, security concerns and best practice all demand that such powerful access rights be restricted and all activity be monitored.

Chaney went on to say, "PUM provides a modern, intuitive web browser user interface that removes the need for scripting skills to define which systems an administrative user can access, or commands (s)he can run.  It can be used to centralize control of all administrative users by routing them through dedicated Access Servers or by allowing direct connection to Managed Servers."

The software, which is written in Java, utilizes SSH-2 as its standard communication method and can be implemented as an "agentless" environment i.e. no software needs to be installed on the Managed Servers.  It runs on top of any proven JDBC/ODBC-compliant database management system and utilizes role-based access controls based on ITIL guidelines.

The software is offered on an annual subscription license basis only, and the annual fee includes the license, support and all upgrades.  The launch pricing is set at US$1.00 per system per day, or US$365 per system per year.  Discounts are provided for volume purchases.
